My son currently is in an Engineering Academy at his hs. It is rigorous, summer work, etc and is interested in minoring in music also. He is in marching band, wind ensemble, and jazz band. Are there any colleges that have programs where this would work?? We live in the mid- Atlantic region. Cross country would not be preferred. Any guidance would be great.
My daughter is not a music minor, but very much involved in instrumental music at her college. She is an engineering major. One of the issues that came up when looking at schools was that had schools of music was potential schedule conflicts if a non-music major, especially if in engineering where the course load is heavy. Further, if the group travels, as for example, marching bands or some symphonic bands, then it could result in missed class time that is hard to recover from. There are schools, like Purdue for example, that does not have a music school and rehearsals for their excellent music opportunities are scheduled to accommodate for participation. WPI, RPI, and other similar schools have like opportunities.
The number one minor for engineers at Lehigh is music. There are more engineers in the marching band than any other major.
Yes. I have had heard that. Now for the money.
Case Western has numerous options for those interested in music, including scholarships for gifted musicians by audition - even if not majoring in music. WUStL is another school that has a lot of engineers who minor in music.
There are numerous universities of all sizes where engineers make up a large portion of the marching band, and many where there are bands/orchestras for non-music majors (these may not always require auditions and often have evening practices so are easier to fit in an engineering schedule). My D is a BME/Music dual-degree student at UMich, and she has friends doing all sorts of combinations of engineering and music (from double degrees like herself, to music minors, to marching band only). Careful scheduling and time management are critical.
It is often hard to arrange a minor along with engineering. (The alternative is to just take electives in area of interest.) However, I will agree that Case is one of the few schools where music minor (or even double major) seemed doable. I think they also allowed marching band for PE credit.
Univ of Rochester is connected to Eastman school of music. Because the Eng curriculum is more flexible that other schools it is easy for many students to minor in another area and even have dual majors.
I’m a student at WUSTL and I’m having no issues majoring in BME and minoring in music. I might even add an electrical engineering minor.
