And here I thought you were talking about something in Pennsylvania. Fascinating survey. Like you, I assume that a fair number of students donโt know their families household income.
My guess would be that children of the working class know these basic facts of their situation. When I asked my father the answer was a simple one - it was the check he got every other week multiplied by 26. That math might be less easy for those who are clipping coupons, drawing from this or that trust fund, and taking untaxed distributions by way of loans against property holdings. Probably the parents donโt even understand their exact position, and likely the kids donโt want to know it anyhow.

I know a precocious kid who as a young teen figured out that their parentsโ income had to be publicly disclosed due to their jobs. So the kid went and looked it up. Of course, that wasnโt everything but it was probably the bulk of it.
