interesting article on new SAT writing

There is a very interesting article in today's Seattle Times about the new SAT I writing section. This article is reprinted from the Washington Post. A Post reporter was allowed to sit in on a practice session of some of the scorers.

The article explains more about how the essays will be scored. Two scorers will look at each essay, but they look at the essays quickly and work for a long stretch at a time. Very interesting...but a little scary.

You don't need to register to read this if you read it within the next few days.

yes

all i know is that im going to use a handful of nice vocab words most highschool kids dont know and as stupid as it sounds, im going to be sure to drop a few semicolons

anything to belie a good essay. with only a minute or so to read an entire paper it seems logical that small things like this would make a good impression on the grader as he glances over.

If you can believe the referenced article, esoteric vocabulary and punctuation will not be weighted as highly as a well formed consistent argument that has some creative flair to it.
