ASAMST R2A/B

Really interesting material. Not too hard either (although of course you still need to work a bit for a solid A, as you need to do in most classes).

The course title is a bit deceiving though. It’s called Asian American studies, but it covers literature from Mexican Americans, Native Americans, Hispanic Americans, Indian Americans, Korean Americans, Chinese Americans, ect. It’s more like “Minority American Studies” or something.

My brother (who graduated in 2009) told me he took a “Literature in Video Games” course to fulfill his R1B requirement, but I tried looking for it and couldn’t find it. Is it gone??? :(

I’m gonna put in my two cents that you can’t pick an easy R1A/B course, as in you can’t know if the course is easy or not coming into it. The topics and books, more or less, are picked by the GSIs, who teach R1A/B for 2, maybe 3-4 semesters before moving onto bigger and better things like writing their dissertation. Therefore one easy course one semester can be totally different a couple semesters later.

Since the courses are campus requirements, they’re more or less standardized in terms of what you have to learn re: writing. You just learn it from different books/essays/readings, etc. You more or less write 3-4 essays, and have the sameish reading-load. Some readings will be more dense than others and it’s up to you to research the books and see if you’ll like them.

I took CompLit R1B, which was supposed to be really difficult according to past CC posts, and I got a pretty easy A. Your essays are on what you read, and I really enjoyed the booklist. My friend took History of Art, got a B-. She didn’t do a lot of the reading because she kept falling asleep. The easiness of the class depends on you, your work ethic, and your taste in literature.

The only way to somehow discern if you’re going to get an easy R1A/B class is to look at the course description and see if you’ll enjoy reading the assigned books.

I also took Comp Lit R1B and found it to be pretty manageable. Write concisely.

@gobears: Asian American Studies covers so many cultures probably because Native Americans and Mexican Americans historically traveled to America via Bering Strait from Asia?

Agree with arduouspallor, the only time you think an R1A/B is an easy is when you pick a topic that you are interested or easy to understand. Every R&C course has its minimum writing requirement so it’s not like you can write less by picking a certain section. My instructor made me write a brutal 15-page research paper in addition to four or five short essays throughout the semester.
Every R&C course has a different story to tell.
