Interesting observation about for-profit colleges

I see billboards for non-profits and hear radio commercials all the time. (They’re on TV too but I seldom watch.) They make it sound like such a GOOD idea to go there, whatever the cost. Just do it and improve your life!

It’s so disturbing that they are in it for the Federal money they can get.

If a college mainly advertises inside a bus, you might want to consider other opportunities.

In PA., almost all of our community colleges are now seeing decreasing enrollments - esp. for full-time students. People entered college to try to wait out the recession, but now they have used up their loan capacity and can’t afford even community college.

Teachandmom: Thanks for your insight. Hopefully, you have enough experience that you can now try to get a job with a responsible educational employer.

We had a for-profit that was shut down after a local newspaper exposed the 18% interest rates they were using for loans. They weren’t clearly explaining the debt, and students later universally said they had no idea what they owed or what interest rate they would be paying. There were many distressing stories about people who attended that college who could not find a job with their degree, but they were hamstrung by the debt for over a decade.

Meanwhile, there is not enough funding to adequate meet the basic needs of community college students, while our federal education expenses are multiplying because of lack of controls on the for-profits.
