Interesting video on The University of Chicago re: free speech

This was posted on the parents facebook page. In the video, you can also see a glimpse of the old campus and the past and present faculty. I’ll bet if UChicago wanted to enhance their sports, they’ll be able to do so without compromising the integrity of their ideology.

This is an excellent presentation, despite the slightly annoying narrator. The last question was legit. Can It Survive?

They have re-instituted a pretty vibrant sports program (compared to what they had a generation or two ago!). Seriously doubt they can go D1 with the workload expected of each student.

History is great! Universties were like country clubs back then? LOL - that’s what they seem like now! "Plus ça change . . . "

I’m all for fun myself, but when I see some of the going-ons at some universities, I think ‘is this a drinking club, or a school?’

Yeah, true, their sports program is pretty vibrant now.

Also, at 8:36 of the video, is that a quad/plaza on campus that has been flooded? It looks like a pond.

The weakest link in all these is admissions/students. They are the ones that are easily affected by whats hot within the college demographic. If admissions admits too many types who dont appreciate or have the basic characteristics: life of the mind, academic freedom… they will eventually change the college. (the graduate institutions will survive)

^^yeah, but incoming students are very young, and may be the first time in their lives where they may have a strong opinion on any particular subject. Churn 'em out at the UoC, or maybe just the experience of life in general, and see how they come out.

That’s the reflecting pool outside the Law Library. You see the east side of BJ straight ahead.

Edit to add: and a bit of South peeking out from the left.

^^wow, it’s beautiful

^ Here’s a picture of it at night, along with an article about the renovations they did about 10 years ago. Saarinen designed Woodward Court as well, but it was torn down to make room for the Booth building.
