I was accepted to both UW and UR and am having the biggest struggle choosing. I think at UW i gain a better “collegiate experience” with more fun and more name recognition and I feel I can get into the Honors Program. At UR I am going to a better school but with way less people and what people say about the environment is unclear about in regards to how fun it is or fun it isn’t. My biggest concerns with UR (which is leading) is the social experience.
Granted, I’m biased in favor of UW as my kid attends and has had a phenomenal academic experience, but not sure that Rochester is a dramatically different caliber school – both are excellent schools and would offer different kinds of experiences, given the difference in size, location etc. Rankings don’t tell the whole story, but if you look at them, US News has UW at 44 and Rochester at 32 – not a meaningful difference, though the World University ranking difference is dramatic – UW is 28 and Rochester is 101.
UW Honors admission is based on whether a student’s application demonstrates intellectual engagement, it is not stat based – that is why all admitted L&S students are invited to apply, because the idea is, all admitted students could do Honors work, but not everyone wants to. The point of UW Honors in L&S is that it is an opportunity to explore in more depth, rather than some mechanism to separate out the “smart” kids from the rest of the student body. My kid is graduating with Honors in the Liberal Arts, but I’m not sure his friends even know he did Honors, or completed the requirements for Honors. I wouldn’t suggest looking at UW Honors as just a “bauble” to goose up a resume.
Will you be able to visit Rochester at least to get a more direct experience of the social/student life?

Quite seriously, you may want to consider the possible benefits or drawbacks of being labeled as the number #1 party school by the PR:
