well, i received a pretty hefty financial aid package and have some questions about it.
I received grant arnd 48k and campus employment for 2k…
that means that i received aid more than the educational cost (not including board and room)…
does that mean that i have to pay the 14% tax??is it 14% of the whole education cost + room and board (50k) or what? how do i pay the tax?
thanks!

You pay 14% tax on the grants you receive beyond tuition (work-study, loans etc don’t count). For example, say that you got a 48k grant and tuition is 34k. Then you have to pay 14% of 14k (= 48-34) in taxes. If I remember correctly, those taxes are assessed when you file your income taxes. I know that the college sends out an extra tax form to all international students. I remember mine reported a mystery income of a few thousand dollars. I assumed that was the difference between my grants and tuition, but I never checked to make sure that that’s really what it was.

thanks b@r!um!=)

I’m applying as an International Student? Did you get a really good financial aid? How much left did you have to pay? Were you able to get a loan? I’m getting my letter of acceptance (hopefully) in May. I can’t wait. Can you please tell me your experience at BMC as an international Student?

b@r!um, does that 14% tax apply to domestic students and their financial aid packages?

I don’t think so.

hey vannecriss,
i got a really good financial aid from bryn mawr…it’s like 95% of my tuition is covered by the grant so i just need to pay more or less 3000/year (including the scholarship tax).
I LOVE BRYN MAWR. I’m not being bias, it’s just that Bryn Mawr is an awesome place. I really love Bryn Mawr and the people in it. They are so friendly and helpful. At first, I was kinda scared to this new environment but everyone made my transition way smoother and easier than I thought it could be. Don’t hesitate to come to Bryn Mawr if you get accepted!! :)

sweetmuffin!!!
Thank you very much for answering! I’m crossing my fingers! I’d love to go to Bryn Mawr! But I don’t know if I’m gonna get a good financial aid package! I can’t wait to let you know!

I know this isn’t exactly the main financial aid thread, but I was just wondering if Bryn Mawr meets 100% of the demonstrated financial needs of their returning students? I know Bryn Mawr’s FA policy says it meets 100% of the demonstrated need, but after reading the thread on CC on colleges that say they meet 100% of the applicant’s demonstrated need, when they really only meet the full needs of the first year applicants–well, it just got me thinking.

Bryn Mawr continues to meet our full need, although our loans increase each year (to the maximum amount of Stafford loans we are eligible for). My financial aid went up when my younger brother enrolled in college.

your welcome vannecriss :). shoot me with any questions you have if you’re still curious =)

Thanks… I have a question… did you apply as a transfer student or a freshman? I’m applying as a transfer, I’m currently attending to Miami Dade College. If you applied as a transfer, How many credits did they transfer? How was the process? thank you very much

B@r!um, what exactly are terms for the loan pay-off? And what is the maximum loan that can be granted annually? Also, the financial aid package covers tuition and room + board? Is the employment meant for your other expenses then?

Sweetmuffin, is the 2k you earn an annual amount or a monthly amount?

The financial aid package covers the difference between our family contribution and the annual “cost of attendance”: tuition, room, board, personal expenses and health insurance (international students only) for the 8 months that classes are in session. For most students our estimated personal expenses are equal in amount to our expected work-study income. (A few international students get an extra allowance for airfare.) If you work 8 hours a week (average for first-year students), you will earn about $2000 a year. The college will let you work up to 17.5 hours per week on a regular basis.

You should ask the college about loan repayment terms. Not all international students have loans in their financial aid package. I was offered a $3,000 loan in my first year and my award letter stated that any tuition increase would raise my loan amount in the future. Domestic first-year students typically get the maximum amount of Stafford loans (currently $5,500) in their package.

Right, thanks. I’m sorry to be pestering with all these questions, but I have one last thing to ask. My family pretty much can’t contribute anything, so I’m hoping for a 100% financial aid package. Since bryn mawr isn’t exactly need blind, does the amount of aid you’re asking for put you through a more selective process, and thereby reducing your chances, of selection from the waiting list?
