Hi,

So my sister is waitlisted at UVa, and was wondering how international students fare at the university in terms of adjusting to culture shock, or performing academically, or just making use of opportunities available to students?

Hi,

So my sister is waitlisted at UVa, and was wondering how international students fare at the university in terms of adjusting to culture shock, or performing academically, or just making use of opportunities available to students?

Whether there’s any culture shock at all could depend upon which country your sister is coming from and whether she’s used to an urban environment.

Charlottesville is anything, but urban. Most international students think of Charlottesville as a little town in the middle of nowhere.

To the OP: There are plenty of int’l students and they do fairly well (most of them studied at very rigorous international schools and completed the IB diploma), in terms of culture shock…at least my friends were used to traveling constantly, living in different environments and speaking different languages, so they didn’t have any problems adapting to UVA. Most of them complained about Cville and how much they hated it in comparison to their cities (Bogota, Santiago, Madrid, Paris). They would go to D.C. or NYC on the weekends. A lot want to go into the comm school because it basically guarantees them a job at graduation. I don’t think your sister, if she gets in, would have a problem. Where are you guys from?

i personally really don’t care if im living in NYC or Cville. as a matter of fact i’d prefer small towns to big cities.

wahoomb “Charlottesville is anything, but urban. Most international students think of Charlottesville as a little town in the middle of nowhere.”

Exactly. If the OPs sister is used to an urban environment then she may experience some shock living in Charlottesville since it is such a small town. The only issue I ever heard expressed from int’l students in grad school was not having the amenities/food options/atmosphere etc of a large city.

Sorry, I misunderstood your post

wahoomb - No problem - I was writing quickly and didn’t complete my thought.
