international studets+financial aid

can anybody tell me anything bout michigan's stand on international students and finanacial aid?! thanks.

(financial aide being any kind of money the school gives to international students. thanks!!)

Unfortunately Michigan has limited aid for internationals…the amount varies depending on the strength of your application.

To be honest, you’re probably not going to get any. I asked for some in August, and they told me more or less that because I was international I was not eligible to get any money.

How about merit scholarships? Are those given to internationals?

international=zero fin. aid.

yes i know it’s very hard and they give no financial aid. but scholarships! merit scholarships!! anything like that?!

I don’t think internationals are eligible for any money (including merit scholarships)

That is correct blackpen, Michigan does not give out any aid or scholraships to International students. As an international student myself, I thought that was perfectly reasonable. Michigan is an Amercian university and should first and foremost cater to Americans. As long as a single American student must take out a loan to attend Michigan, there is absolutely no legitimate reason why a guest from another country should be given a single cent.

This said, it would be cool if an international alum (or better yet, several international alums) donated money to finance a sholarship fund dedicated entirely for international students.

Totally agree with you Alexandre!

Hey guys, I too agree with the policy and am a PR. Just remember in Jestergirl’s case that she’s lived and studied in Michigan for 13 years and that her mom is a prof at a michigan university. Her residency issue is a little stringent considering she’s spent more time w/folks paying taxes in MI than many of us PRs.

Jestergirl, again, is there any option for you to get your residency sorted? It would and will make the world of difference for you in this case. If your case is refused, I would appeal in your shoes, and maybe even spend a few buck getting legal advice. OOS with no aid for four years hangs in the balance.
Good luck!

kmccrindle: apparently, the basis of their residency decision thing is that unless i have a green card or citizenship, there is (unfortunately) no absolute chance of me getting instate tuition. …i hate u of m. haha
