I'm a British student applying to the USA for Fall 2010 and I don't think my family will eb able to pay the full cost of tuition.

I've applied for all the merit scholarships available at the various colleges I'm hoping to get into but in the meantime I'm looking for info on potential loans I can take out to cover the remaining tuition fees.

I know there are several options for international students that require a US co-signer, but unfortunately I don't know anyone in the States so thats not a viable option.

Are there any loans (I'm guessing they will be private) for students that do NOT require a US co-signer?

I'm well aware that graduating in debt is not the ideal situation, but I'm just looking for options at this stage.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You will likely have to get your loans from your own country. American banks do not like to loan to int’ls (w/o American co-signers) because they’re afraid that once you graduate, you’ll return to your home country and not pay your loan.

What student loans are available from English banks?

How much are your parents willing to borrow? (If these will be YOUR loans, that might be an issue. How much can students borrow in England w/o co-signers? In the US, the amount is low - between $5k and 10k per year)

There are not any loans of significance that I can think of that would not require a cosigner. Even private loans will want the loan to have someone on it with income and collaterol. The banks need to know that if you default on the payment, there is some way they can recover their funds. If you have no income or collaterol, you will not qualify for a loan.

Can you get a private loan in the UK?

You will need to verify that you have significant funds to cover your expenses as a student for the full year BEFORE you will be given a visa to study here. This can include financial aid and loans…but the loans would have to have been secured to be listed.
