International Travel

I am hoping to gain insight on EC's.

The summer of my child's sophmore year of high school, had the opportunity to travel to Zambia, Africa and stayed 3 weeks performing community service. That totals about 170 hours of international community service.

Will this have any weight at all for admissions?

Something like that should be lower on his list of EC’s. If he only did it once (even if it was 3 weeks) then it doesn’t really show a huge amount of commitment like being an officer of a club for 3 years does. Having said that, it most certainly will hold some weight in the admissions process and it will be looked upon favorably.

Sometimes students talk about mission trips that were more of a very expensive resume filler. If your son took a trip to Zambia because of good intentions, he can easily portray that and the adcoms will like it!

Best regards,

Thanks Mike.

I see as a parent, I have made some serious wrong choices in guiding my child. I just wish I knew about CC when my child started high school instead of the summer before senior year. WOW!

What you explained here is a good EC, don’t get me wrong! I’m just saying, assuming he has others, put those higher on the list.

Anything else, just ask!

Schools will put an activity like that in perspective: an opportunity afforded to someone who… can afford it! It’s a great experience and I’m sure your child will learn a great deal from it. Just don’t think of it as something that will make or break their college app.
