Internet Speed?

What speeds does the internet at UCSC go at?

Also, should I get a smartphone - such as a Motorola Droid - for College? I'm not sure it'd be worth it to get a smartphone that I'd have to pay $30 bucks a month for a internet data plan that I'd be getting free off of Cruznet.

I don’t remember the exact speed, but it’s over 500kb/s.

Cruznet is not compatible with smartphones. You have to use Cicso NAC agent to verify your system’s integrity before you can access Cruznet, and it’s not available for smartphone use.

My smartphone accessed Cruznet fine during orientation. I don’t know if they changed the security or something, but it worked.

University Internet speeds tend to be really fast. This is what my cousin got at Berkeley a couple weeks ago.

83.91 mb/s (megabits) = 10.5 mB/s (megabytes) = 85924 kb/s (kilobits) = 10740 kB/s (kilobytes)

I don’t know how fast it goes but it goes pretty fast faster then my internet connection at home.

They change the security during orientation so anyone can access the network without having to download the software. It’s already confusing enough at orientation without having to worry about that. :P

Did they change that REALLY recently? I used Cruznet on my iPhone all of last year (Sept - June) and I was able to log in fine. I guess I would sometimes get an error where I wasn’t redirected to the log in page, but that only happened 1/5 times.

It works fine. I know a number of professors who would pretty much flip out if the techstaff messed up the network for iphones and other portable devices.
