Interning

When should you start interning? How old do you have to be/ should you be when you start interning? Where should you intern? Where should a science-loving person intern?
Thanks!

I guess it is never too early to start interning, but I think that sometime in the college years is a good place to start. The summer is a great time to do this. The summer between sophomore and junior year would be ideal, I think, because you have plenty of time to redirect your educational goals if you hate the internship and decide you want to try out a different path.

However, some internships do require previous experience with some things. For instance, I am heavily involved in the social sciences. Most employers/people who have interns want students to have some research experience and knowledge of statistics from class. So, you may have to wait until you have more educational experiences/classes in you major or field of interest before these opportunities are available to you.

My best advice is to go to career services at your school. They are paid to answer these questions, and can probably provide detailed information that is relevant to your specific career interests. They may also help you with the “where to intern” question based on your location and connections they may have. And, I think it depends on what science you are interested in as to what type of internship you’d be applying for.

It is probably too late to apply for most internships for this summer, but there might be a few that haven’t closed off applications.
