Hey,
So I'm currently a freshman at a top-25 university (USA). I'm currently in a dilemma now because during February and March, I applied to a bunch of internships both located near my university and near my home. At this point, I have only heard back from a few and have been rejected by all of them. Is there anything I can do now to try to obtain an internship? Even if I receive an internship near my university, I don't think I would be able to accept it because it is most likely too late to receive housing. I would also appreciate it if someone could give me other tips about how to look for other summer opportunities (jobs, volunteer opps, etc.). Because spring break has passed, I can't go door-to-door to businesses to ask for job opportunities. I have looked for some volunteer opportunities and job opportunities at my local mall nearby via the internet, but I was wondering if it would be too late if I tried door-to-door once summer started (I go to a school with a quarter system, so I don't leave school until June). Thanks for all responses.

P.S. I’m looking for general business internships. I live in the NYC area, so I assume there should be a lot of opportunities for internships/volunteer opportunities.

pick up the phone and make calls. Be willing to do any work, even if it is not directly related to your major, but in a type of business that you would like to work for after graduation. Be humble and grateful.

If you can’t find anything, see if you can get a position tutoring. Any job at all will help you get an internship next summer.

Does you school maintain job lists? My son’s school posts job openings submitted by people and businesses in the community.

Let your family, neighbors and friends know you are looking. A job lead can come from almost anywhere but here’s how my son and some of his friends got jobs last year after their freshman/sophomore year.

Friend A. - His Parent’s neighbor was a manager at a large discount chain. A. got a full time job as a cashier.
Friend B. - B’s dad plays in an adult hockey league and asked around in the locker room if anyone could use a Civil Engineering student intern. He worked full time in the office of a construction company.
Friend C. - C. put on a nice shirt and tie and literally went from one business to the next on Main Street, asking for a chance to work, until someone offered him a job. Only took a one day. He sold (and ate) ice cream all summer.
Friend D. - The manufacturing company I work for hires seasonal workers during the summer. I sent the job announcement to a few kids I thought might like the work and D. was hired part time.
Dear Son - While dropping a car off at our favorite mechanic’s shop, my husband asked the owner if she could use any help this summer. Her clerk was leaving in June to have a baby. Son followed up and got the job.
