Internship & Catia

Would it annoy your mentor if you asked so many questions? Like won't he/she have his own responsibilities, and you'll have to interrupt each time to ask a question?

IMO, that's what separates a good company from a bad company. Five times an hour is an awful lot, but usually people will help you out if you need it. I've been pretty happy with my experiences, though I have a few friends who have had horrible ones where their bosses would never want to be bothered.

I think this depends on the company, but do some interns have some big project or some presentation with deadlines?

I was hoping that I can work at a steady pace and learn everyday, drop the work and leave at 5PM and think about it the next day. Hoping too that I won't have to stay overtime as an intern or be stressed to meet a deadline.

It does depend on the company. A friend of mine had an internship at a plant for a large pharmaceutical company, and had to make a presentation about her work to management at the conclusion of her internship. I think it was about improving the efficiency of one part of the plant. I never really had anything like that.

You're probably more likely to find that in companies that don't work directly for a client, i.e. aren't consultant engineers. Otherwise, they'd probably be more reluctant to spend everybody's time like that. They'd rather use to do something that can directly benefit the client.

Every company, everywhere you go, at every position, will have deadlines. It's unavoidable. If your work is more independent of the full-time staff, you probably won't have to (and probably won't even be able to) stay for OT. I can't imagine why they would need CAD drawings of the plant immediately. If they did, they would've had this done long ago by CAD drafters. If you're more involved with the daily workings of the company, it might affect you more.

As an intern, there was a period of 6 weeks and a period of 2 weeks where I worked 60-80 hours a week to help the team meet the client's deadline. Not the norm, but it happens in rare cases.

Like Ken said, it really does depend upon the company.

One thing to add, though, is that most interns are paid hourly. I'm salaried. I technically make a lot more per hour than the interns, but if the interns work overtime, they're paid time-and-a-half, whereas my overtime is uncompensated (and expected!). At the hours I'm working, what I'm truly paid per hour is less than what the interns make (not by a ton, but it's enough), so if they work the same hours that I do (and a few of them do, and overtime is not at all discouraged around here...) they can make GOOD money...!!

I don't really mind working overtime. As long as they pay me for it, I'll be fine.

Is voluntarily tutoring at a community college this summer helpful for a resume especially for a ME major? I'm only taking classes, and I would like to review some calc 1 and 2 stuff before I go into multi variable and differential eq next year. The community college is looking for volunteer tutors, and I think I can help. But I don't know how much it would help ME in return.

Enh. Some experience in something is better than none at all, but it probably won't help you immensely.

The only thing it might help you with is landing a TA position in grad school, if you decide to go...

hi everybody
I’ve studied mechanical engineering (designing and manufacturing) in another country for 2 years and then immigrated to US, I also know CATIA well (part design, assembly, drafting, sheetmetal design) and I live in California. It’s while I’m looking for somewhere to start as an intern or entry level employee but I receive no answer where ever I apply. I also have 3 patents. How can I start? where should I start?
By the way I’m not at college now because I would be considered an international student for 1 year :(
