I'm a soon-to-be sophomore who recently got a phone message from Discovery Channel in the morning asking me if I was interested in a fall internship and to call back. I applied in early July for a summer internship. Now my question is, how much do you think this internship would help in applying to film schools(USC, NYU, UCLA, etc., transferring student)? I only have one other internship and that was for music management.

Bump! Anyone?

More experience in the area is better than less. But it depends on what you would do. Some internships sound good, but are nothing more than free labor for the company, giving you no additional knowledge/skill/experience just a title.

The person who left me a phone message said I would be working on a continuing TV series. She didn't really say exactly what I'd be doing.

Congratulations! It's an amazing opportunity, and I think it will help -- particularly if you use the opp to get info and skills to create your own films. Even if you're just a go-fer (which is what I anticipate), you still can learn a lot by watching and by asking questions. Then, use the info to create your own films or scripts, which you'll submit as part of your portfolio when you apply to film schools.

Older S got into Syracuse's film school on the basis of a script that he ad written, so I know that portfolio is extremely important to film schools, more important than who you know, etc.
