Internship/temporary employment between undergraduate and graduate school?

Hi all,

I am a senior engineering student. Due to an internship I had Fall 2016, my graduation has been pushed back a semester. Instead of having graduated this Spring, I now graduate next Fall (Fall 2017).

Additionally, I wish to pursue graduate school. This means I apply Fall 2017, and hear back after graduating the following spring. Assuming I get into graduate school (which would start Fall 2018) this means I have 7-8 months of gap before grad school. I am no longer a full time student. I’m not a student at all.

Would I even be considered for an engineering internship or temporary employment? What do I do with this time?

Furthermore, if I don’t get into grad school, that means I spent the last months of my undergrad NOT looking for full time employment.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Why not graduate in the summer term?

You can apply for jobs, internships and graduate school. Depending on what comes through, you respectfully decline the others.

If you are interested in a Masters degree, starting January 2018 is certainly possible. PhD programs generally start in Fall. A 6-8 month internship is also a very reasonable thing to do. As others have stated, apply for both.
