I did an unpaid internship at Credit Suisse for several weeks this summer, and I'm wondering about how much it'll help for college admissions (specifically business schools). Do you guys think it's something that not a lot of college applicants do? Should I include it in some of my supplemental essays? Thanks.

These days, there’s not much that’s truly unique. Plenty of people have done internships. You’re not going to be floating way out in front of the pack with this, but it will definitely be an advantage.

If it was something about which you were very passionate and in which you did something significant (beyond just having an internship), write an essay about it. If not, just brag about it on your resume and in the activities section.

People aren’t unaware about what high school interns can do, regardless of the name worthiness of the org (Credit Suisse). We know you file and copy and scan and do simple projects – and get a taste of what the real business is like. If through these situations, you had some life changing event or grew in a major way (i.e. worthy of an essay topic), I’d be surprised.

I’m glad for your internship but anyone who has had to deal w/summer interns knows of their relative shallow experience.

My mentor, a respected proprietary trader, actually let me trade some stock on my own, and I usually made several hundred bucks a day. So overall, I didn’t just do the usual stuff like getting people coffee or printing crap in the office, and I ended up gaining a lot of knowledge and interest in business. Does this sound like something to include in an essay? Also, is it a good idea to ask him for a rec? And thanks everyone for the replies.

Anyone else wanna offer some opinions?
