Internships

Does anyone know what percentage of students complete internships? Also, the other school I'm considering has an application you can complete if you're needy and get a few thousand dollars of funding: does Grinnell have anything like that?

I don’t know the number of Grinnell students who do internships, but I am guessing it is relatively high, compared to similar LACs. Obviously, Grinnells location makes school-year internships rare, but Grinnell uses some of its very large endowment to fund many internships opportunities for its students. It also has a very loyal alumni base and many of them offer internships to Grinnell students.

Grinnell also has something called a mentored advanced project. A student is paid a stipend of over $3000 and earns four credits for a ten-week summer project under the mentorship of a faculty member. The student also has the opportunity to do follow-up work for additional credits and, as I understand it, the student usually gets college funding to present the project at a professional conference. I am not sure if other colleges offer these, but what a wonderful opportunity!

Yes, Grinnell funds otherwise unfunded internships. The alt-break activities are also amazing. My son worked at an urban organic farm in Milwaukee and did demolition and construction work in New Orleans.
