I have been wondering this, as my mother does not want to travel a few hundred miles for all of the interviews and pay for all of the plane tickets.

Does going to the school for an interview and tour heighten your chances over having an interview over some kind of communication program, such as Skype?

It's obvious that it looks like you're more serious if you travel all of the way to the school, but we don't have the money, and my mother just doesn't want to go through all of the driving and plane riding.

At some schools, its required that you visit the campus and tour to show them that you’re serious about the school. To be honest, I think it’s really important that you see the school in person. After every tour I went on, my opinion of that school drastically changed. Also, it’s really hard to find out whether a school is a good “fit” for you or not without visiting the campus.

If you honestly can’t make it for a tour, a Skype interview would work. I’ve heard about that happening quite a bit on CC.

I agree with ifax108 that it is beneficial to tour your schools, but most schools will understand if you are not able to interview on campus. Be sure to research each schools interview policies. Many schools have a network of off-campus alumni who would be happy to interview you. It was not feasible for me to travel across the country for an on-campus interview, and three of my four interviews were done with alumni, the other Skype. I personally felt a lot more comfortable during the in-person interviews than with Skype, although I know thats not everyones experience. If you decide to do a Skype interview, do some Skype trial runs, and be sure that youre familiar with the program. But, in general, I dont think it is at all detrimental to you to have your interview off campus. You can decide which school is a better fit during revisits.

Certainly viewing the school is more beneficial to you, your Mother and the school. As stated some schools policies are clear. Also check for Admissions on the Road where the school’s admission teams travel around the country.

I think as long as you show your interviewer that you are passionate for the school, and have good motives for wanting to go there, you will be fine either way. (I did one skype interview and one alumni interview, and it all worked out in the end) :)

I applied to the Kent School and had my interview over Skype due to time issues. I was accepted. If you are applying to a lot of schools and money and/or time is an issue, schools will understand. Talk to the admission offices about Skype interviews.

A skype interview may be adequate, but it is awkward and does not make as good an impression as a face-to-face interview on campus. I would do skype as a last resort, if it would be impossible (financially, logistically) to do an interview any other way.
