Interview Topics

I just recieved an interview invitation. I've researched the guy who is supposed to interview me, and we have several similarities (such as creative writing and other courses). Would it be okay to bring these up with him at the interview, or would that be just creepy?

I have the same question!

Creepy. Interviewers are regular people who probably would be surprised to know how much information about them is on the internet. He’ll ask you what you activities you enjoy, don’t worry. Just act surprised when you find out “you have so much in common.”

Princeton interviews can be treated as “getting to know you” session. It’s an informal chat so just let yourself go with the flow of the moment. Unless your interviewer is really passive, you should be able to have a nice conversation.

I don’t think you need to bring up anything with regards to similarity. More likely than not, those similarities you have with your interviewer will naturally surface in the conversation.

I figured as much. Well, at least now I know where to focus my answers a little more and hope for a reaction.

of course i’d research your interviewer up, but i personally would avoid bringing up similarities (ie their major, career) unless you are confident you know what you are talking about.
if you slip up, they’ll notice since you’re talking about a subject they’ve studied for their lives

I just had my interview and despite both of us being in suits, it was EXTREMELY casual. If the chance arises, and if you know your stuff, I’d say go for it.

I interview for my undergrad school and personally, I don’t want the interviewees to impress me with how much they know about my field (I don’t even tell them what I studied unless it’s relevant). I try to get them to talk about what they enjoy and what they know about. That way I can see them in their element. I wouldn’t want them to try to impress me that way; impress me because you’re poised, give insightful answers, and are a fit for the school.
