On the Princeton supplement, i noted that I was interested in getting a certificate in finance. I still am, but i have little to no experience in the area. It interests me and for that reason i signed up for an economics class this year. I haven't taken the class yet and I'm afraid my interviewer is going to ask me questions about the economy. I'm not that knowledgeable. I'm about to check out some books on economics and read the business sections of several newspapers. Am i going overboard here or is my worry warranted?

Yes. If you’re even asked about it, just know why you’re interested for a reason a little better than, “I want to make a lot of money.” For example, the following will probably not happen:

Interviewer: So, even though interviewers like myself aren’t usually given any additional information on applicants other than their basic contact information, I nonetheless magically found out that you put down an interest in finance on your application. Is that correct?

You: i* Yes… that’s right.

Interviewer: Well then, could you explain to me what you know about finance and the subject of economics? Be aware that if you don’t possess an intricate and deep knowledge of the subject, and have not read and memorized the latest edition of the Economist, I will write a scathing report on your behalf.

You: Well sir, you see, the thing is… I don’t really know too much about finance. I’m taking a class on it pretty soon, though–

Interviewer: Irrelevant! At Princeton, you’re only allowed major in or get certificates in subjects you already know a lot about. Were you not aware of that?

You: No sir… but I really want to learn more…

Interviewer: Nonsense! I’m sorry, son, but it appears to me you’re not Princeton material. Have a nice day.

Actually that’s a pretty accurate representation of what has happened many times before…

Why don’t you surf Wikipedia for a while to gain some knowledge about the economy. Surely there is a reason you want to learn it…

Yeah… I plan to open up my own store about 15-20 years after i graduate college. I hope to have enough money by then to start up a business without going bankrupt. I figure getting an education in economics or finance couldn’t hurt.

Absent

Hahahah! That was excellent - and provided much needed laughs. Thank you! :D
