Interviews?

I sent in my ED application on November 1st and received my login/password info a few days after. All my required parts are logged in as received, yet I still haven’t received a call/email from Brown regarding an Alumni Interview. Should I be worried?

You may or may not ever get an interview call. They are conducted by alumni volunteers – therefore some applicants will and some will not get interviews. They are randomly assigned – i.e. there’s no pre-sorting of likely applicants who get interviews and the zero chancers who don’t get interviews.

Indeed you may have a classmate with no chance having already been interviewed while you, never get interviewed yet admitted. It’s totally possible.

My admission came w/o ever having a Brown interview. That’s just how it is. Stop worrying.

I got an interview but the alumni said it did not have a big affect so … dont worry

This will hopefully answer your question.

Thanks all, I got an e-mail from my interviewer today. He said that he was really busy this whole week and asked that I do a phone interview with him tomorrow, which is strange since I live in a big metropolitan area.

^ It seems you’re just determined to find something to worry about. Why would that be strange? You have a conscientious alum who wants to get your report to them in a timely manner. Just relax.

Best of luck to you

I was regional coordinator for several years–let me shed some light on what happens, from an interviewer’s perspective. Every week or so the coordinator gets a batch of applicants for the region, and tries to assign each candidate to an alum in their immediate area (maybe 5, 10 miles–maybe the same state–it all depends on availability). Some alumni are quick to contact their candidates; others are swamped with job, family, and other obligations and aren’t as quick on the draw. Inevitably, a few kids don’t get contacted or are contacted much later than we’d originally hoped they would be.

The assignments are TRULY RANDOM. I tried to at least match interests, e.g. humanities with humanities, science with science. The current coordinator doesn’t seem to care too much: although my concentration was Poli Sci, he keeps giving me PLME candidates. There is no “value” placed on one candidate versus another–if you apply, we try to assign you an interview. In general, yes–the first person who submits an app will get assigned an interview before the last person, but if the candidate is assigned to a particularly busy interviewer then s/he may STILL not get an interview.

The most salient point was made by #2 and #3–It will not make or break a candidate’s acceptance.

Hey, thanks for all the replies. They really were helpful. Sorry that I’m being a little wary, I know that I shouldn’t be. Overall, I know that my interview and in general, my application isn’t that big of a deal. I know that Ivies are a little bit out of my league based on my lower test scores. But why not try, right? Better to apply and get rejected than to not apply and always wonder.
