Interviews

I know for sure that I want to have an interview before I apply. I was wondering if there's anyone who has been to a UChicago interview before that knows the style of questions I'll be asked and what I should expect or even has any general tips for me? I haven't ever had a college interview before so I have no idea what to prepare for.

I’m an entering UChicago freshman, and I’ve had three different college interviews for Princeton, Yale, and UChicago. They were all decent, but the UChicago one was probably the most enjoyable for me. It was also the shortest of the three. That could vary depending on your interviewer, though. My UChicago interview was basically just a conversation. I was asked what features of the university most appealed to me, and why I thought it was a good fit. I mentioned a pre-professional program that allows selected students to begin medical school during their fourth year of college, and this sparked a conversation because my interviewer (a lawyer) had applied to the same program, was rejected, and decided to study abroad fourth year instead (before later deciding to go to law school isntead). So we talked about study abroad interests and whatnot. We also talked about my academic interests and how I spend my time (extra-curriculars). I was given the opportunity to ask questions about the school, so I asked her about her feelings towards the core and the house system. The truth is that interviews can all be wildly different, even if they’re for the same school, depending on how the interviewer decides to structure it. I would just suggest having a list of questions about the school that you want to ask, and I would quickly brainstorm what you want to say about your academic interests, extra-curriculars, and any other college/career/life goals. Make sure you have some good reasons to list about why you like this particular school and why you think it’d be a good fit for you. Dress is usually business-casual unless otherwise instructed. Don’t over-rehearse your responses. Let the interview just be a natural conversation, and it’ll be enjoyable for both people. You don’t need to be too nervous. The interview has little impact in admissions, and it’s just an opportunity for you to learn more about the school and for the school to learn more about you. I hope that helps you out a bit, and good luck!

That may be difficult. Ask the admission office whether they can arrange for one. As for the questions asked, in my own experience they were the same as for any other school: why you want to apply to our school, what are your general interests, etc. Make sure to check out the thread on interview in the college admission forum as well, which has a lot of useful tips.

Good luck!

I got accepted EA, never had an interview.
Rejected at all the colleges for which I did have an interview for though! XD

:p! Haha, for me it was the opposite— I was accepted at all the schools for which I did have an interview. To the OP: um, don’t worry, interviews are supposed to help :].
