oh and i do the IB.. higher math, bio, chem and standard economics, spanish and english..predicted pts..no idea..they are not released at my school

Sounds like you are a good candidate. Your essays should be good and you should put a lot of care into the 'Why Swarthmore' essay. Good luck! Your record of activism is a big plus for Swarthmore.

Thanx achat! ive just finished my "why swarthmore" essay and i basically talked about the particular courses at swat that interest me most and clubs i wld like to join.. its not meant to be creative is it?

Well, if you can make it creative, fine. It's meant to show why you would be a good fit for Swarthmore, so, no, it doesn't have to be particularly creative but should be thoughtful. And remember, clubs come and go and you can form your own if you don't find one you like. But writing about clubs is fine too.

You'll be a very strong candidate, especially if your SAT IIs will be good. Swarthmore is not need-blind for internationals (although many international students do get financial aid), so your need (or lack of need) for fin. aid might make a difference.
I think your ideas for "Why Swarthmore?" essay are good, as long as it's well written. You should have a very good chance.

good luck to you to ckakalacheva! and thank you to all who have posted their suggestion! they've been really helpful! I would love to go to Swarthmore..although ive never visited the campus.. but i ve heard its's beautiful!

Swarthmore is beautiful. But you should select a college
by character, not by beauty; Just like a man would select
a wife. Because, after a while, as you learn more deatils,
beauty will be forgotten. You have to check whether the
character is a good match for you.

its not only the campus...that is the least of my concerns.. i wanted a school which had a strong emphasis on activism and social service (as you can probably tell from my EC's) and yet had very strong academics. the campus being beautiful is just a huge bonus!

It (beauty comment) was half tonge-in-cheek.

So are you from Colombo? How did you come to know about Swarthmore? Looks like a Swarthmore is a good fit for you. Note that essay and references are really important. I don't know whether you get rankings on your transcript, but if you are on top 5% of class ask someone to write that. Usually grades in Sri Lankan schools, I think, are low in US standards.

hehe i guess i dint pick that up..No actually i am from Singapore but a few students in my school got together to organize a conflict resolution conference for high school students in Sri Lanka. I found out about Swarthmore while checking the US news website so I am quite lucky that I managed to find a school that I would love to attend! I do the IB so i am hoping that should be enough for Swarthmore. But thank you for your comments! Its amazing how helpful everyone on CC is!

I am an intnl as well.
I think your stats are very decent for Swarthmore but it gets extremely competitive when you are applying with need for financial aid.
FOCUS on the "Why Swarthmore" essay a lot and try to avoid the sterotype international students' "why" based on college ranking.

Penumbra - get on AIM sometime! I'm trying to get into contact with as many Swatties as possible to wittle away at the 8 months before we meet in Pennsylvania...
