Investment Banking: Clearing things up--FAQ

Duke isn't that good, it gets recruited well my MS only because John Mack went there (CEO of Morgan)--and as we all know he recruites like a parasite from his alma mater.

Wharton is right.

jnpn, ive been reading this forum and all I can say is ask you, why are you so negative? Just be real, man....you'll be liked. Trust me.

MS isn't the only BB Duke does well with. For example, Goldman took 15 from Duke last year.

Cornell is all the way up there? O.o That's surprising.
And Northwestern is lower than UChicago?? I'm also surprised. Wow.

Yup, Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, and Banc of America Securities are also among the top employers for Duke students.

Majayiduke09 and jnpn---You're right, but there is a reason for that...which I won't get into here (I thought maybe jnpn knew since he probably has BB intern experience.)

Aquamarinee: Yeah Northwestern hasn't been doing so hot. Their still a "target," but have been placing barely anybody on the street. A lot of Northwestern peeps like consulting better it seems.

So is it because Northwestern is better recruited in consulting that people choose not to go into iBanking? Also, exactly how well does UChicago fare in comparison? It seems like they're about the same?

I haven't heard of any such reason to discount Duke's BB recruiting numbers. I'd like to hear it.

Are investment bankers totally cool with totally cool jobs?

No. Think Revenge of the Nerds minus Booger. For the few that were cool, their work beats them down so much that they end up with personalities like Terry Schiavo.

Is this in regards to MBA programs?

Most of those schools don't even have an undergraduate business program. IMO, economics should not replace a financing degree for those trying to get into financing.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to do IBD. A trainee can be taught to make a pitch book and all the "math" behind a live deal in a couple of weeks.

That list is directly from ibankingoasis by some dude who isn't a banker. The guy is a joke. It got derided there, its getting derided here.

And even pre-Mack, GS has more or less been a fixture in the top 5 employer list at Duke. Ross should be on that list. Hopkins is a joke. Cornell isn't that high. CIT is a joke. Williams is tier 2 and Amherst is tier 4? Incorrect.

And here is the link cause I knew someone would ask: http://career.studentaffairs.duke.edu/employer/recruit/stats/2007.html
You got links from 05-07 there. Here is 04: http://career.studentaffairs.duke.edu/employer/recruit/stats/2004

Work up a lather.

You were an intern at ML. Lets not get ahead of ourselves here. And you posted a ranking by some kid on ibankingoasis.

Really informative thread here, fun read. Hoping to get into I-banking myself, I'd like to know what the chances of getting an i-banking analyst position or even internship are when you come out of (or are in) a non-target school? Two of the schools I'm looking at are UM/U South Carolina, both with Int'l Business majors. I heard you don't necessarily have to major in Finance to go into i-banking, and I think int'l business is overall a more attractive major.

Wondering since I saw GS on the list of companies that seem to recruit from UM on their brochure. I'd love some insight on the matter =)
