Invitations For Scholarship Weekend

Does anyone know when invitations are sent out to Scholarship candidates?

I am a student with the scholars program (and an Admissions Ambassador).
Students who are chosen as finalists will receive a letter telling them so by the first week in March. Selection for consideration for one of our major merit awards is tantamount to admission to the university. In other words, you can see that as an acceptance. The scholarship selection events will occur at the end of March/beginning of April. Best wishes! If you have any other questions, I would love to answer them. Send me a PM.

yeah! furman class of 2011! i'll be there in the fall. which scholarship (scholarships?) did you apply for?

i hope it goes well for you - good luck!

How many students are invited, and how many will be offered the scholarship?

momtomany-----
Here is a thread I found from last year around this time.....it sounds like they invite in the neighborhood of 30-40.

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=151042%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=151042</a></p>

Furman's webiste has great info about the scholarships offered...how many are given out....requirements for each....that kind of thing:

<a href="http://www.engagefurman.com/index.asp?id=62%5B/url%5D">http://www.engagefurman.com/index.asp?id=62</a></p>

Wow! That many interviewing for four scholarships? That's a bit intense!

there are up to four full scholarships offered, as well as a handful of full tuitions offered. Almost everyone who attends the weekend will recieve some merit based aid.

Well, I can see that Spring is already here. Now is the time when everyone starts to stress about invites. Let me calm everyone slightly. Yes, there are only 1-4 Lays. But- there are 20 Hollingsworth Awards for SC students
($25,000), 10 Dukes (full tuition), and and about 50 Honor and Achiever awards given. Even more, there are several really good departmental awards worth up to $10,000 per annum. Furman is doing everything it can to make an education affordable as well as reward high performers.

HOBYNC, I hope you are studying for your finals!!

You said, "there are up to four full scholarships offered, as well as a handful of full tuitions offered. Almost everyone who attends the weekend will recieve some merit based aid."

My son was invited this year to the Wake interviews but did not receive the scholarship. Do you suspect the same would be true of Wake??

HOBYNC --- have any letters been mailed out yet for scholarship weekend? We are nervous on this end!!

(i was an ED candidate for the hollingsworth scholarship.)

if this helps at all...

2 Dec 2006 - music audition @ furman
8 Dec 2006 - notified of admission and status as a hollingsworth finalist
14 Dec 2006 - phone interview for hollingsworth
(15 Dec 2006 - ED notification date of admission for applicants that were not finalists)
18 Dec 2006 - awarded hollingsworth and received official flag
20 Dec 2006 - received letter about music scholarship requirements

(i threw the music thing in there just in case any one else was waiting on music scholarship information.)

so, maybe that might give you all some sort of idea how it works out...? i dunno - i just thought i'd share my experience in hopes that someone would get something out of it.

i know how hard waiting is - i really do! it's terrible, but when it's over...it's one of the best feelings ever - i promise! :)

Congratulations ... what a great Christmas present! How nice to have that all taken care of so early in the year. Everyone keeps asking where my D is going to school & I have to explain that she is still waiting for acceptances --- unheard of around here, where everyone applies rolling admit (or EA). Further complicating things is the need for merit money --- so we wait (not so patiently at times!) in hopes of hearing something good.

i got my inivitation just today!! good luck with yours!

also the "1-4" scholarships? does that mean many years they don't give out four? and not all 15 of the full tuition ones? Or do they generally try and award them all.

because 19 atleast full tuition scholarships out of 40 students is actually really GOOD odds...

One of my friends is getting a full ride as he signed with Furman football.
I've yet to hear on my application decision...
I applied regular decision, so thats probably why.

My daughter also got her invitation yesterday. I am trying to find a flight that won't cost an arm & a leg (we are from MI)! She is really excited. My understanding is that there will be up to 4 Herman W Lay scholarships awarded to members of the class of 2011. The Duke scholarships will be awarded to Lay finalists who are not awarded the Lay. Some students at the interviews will, unfortunately, not receive either. But I agree ... the odds are excellent!

labellanina, my D only got her acceptance because she was invited to the Lay scholarship interview (she also applied RD). Hang in there ... it's only 2 weeks until you know!! Good luck.

So, I got a letter for the Hollingsworth today. And there's a schedule but it's a bit vague. Can anyone who went last year tell us what to expect? The thread to the Lay discussion mentioned group interviews. . . Do they do both individual and group interviews? Or is that just for Lay?
Thanks muchly :)

This year is the first year for a Hollingsworth WEEKEND. Last year it was just an application, as it was the first year.

We were thankful to have received an invitation for my son to come interview. It arrived yesterday by Fed Ex, and my heart skipped a beat.

I hesitated to post b/c I didn't want to be a discouragment to anyone, but I know I'm watching several boards like this one, and every post helps me determine wether it's a hope to nurture or move on from as a closed door. Hopes of scholarship are really hopes of college for my son. The usual... most universitys' definitions of need differ from our definition of need, so we're left with merit based options... and very thankful to have some.

momtomany, I know what you are saying. We share your situation & your sentiments. It really is nice to have the hope of a good opportunity at an excellent school that our daughter really likes.
