Was anyone else invited to the Directed Studies program? I don't really have an interest in it, but here's some of what my letter says:

"Every freshman who matriculates at Yale is invited to apply to DS. Because of your fine academic record and broad intellectual interests, it will not be necessary for you to apply. We are offering you a place in the program."

Am I an idiot to turn this down? I'm just not big on the humanities.

i don't know much about it except that it's also known as "directed suicide"...but i would wait for a current student to reply to this :)

Did you just get the letter today? There's a lot of info and discussion about DS on the admitted students site. Post their and you'll get feedback from current Yale undergrads.

I'm in DS this year, and it's definitely a great program, which anyone who is interested in the DS curriculum should seriously considering doing. That said, as cool as it is to have every class taught by professors as a freshman (I haven't had a single TA), if you aren't interested in the material, you shouldn't do DS, because you will hate it. It will take up a significant percentage of your time (and an even more significant percentage of your school-related time) as a freshman, so finding the subjects boring will mean that DS can lead to nothing but misery or becoming a complete slacker and not doing very well freshman year.
This doesn't mean that someone who wants to go into the sciences shouldn't do DS. Though you have to be interested in the literature, philosophy, and political thought studied, it doesn't have to be your sole focus, and DS is compatible with a science major (it will get all of your distribution requirements out of the way). So, all in all, it's an individual choice, but personally I'm very glad to have made it.

You could mail it to me so I could be pre-admitted! Did it come with your admissions decision or later?

Cool. DS sounds awesome! Does anyone else know when the letters were sent out or if any more are being sent?

The letters were supposedly mailed out on the 6th. I was very surprised S didn't get an invitation, but it doesn't take that long for mail to get to Cali.
