I am a high school senior and plan on attending Iowa next year. I have the opportunity to enroll in the honors program and plan on doing so, but I'm curious as to whether the honors housing is optional? If so, does anyone have housing recommendations? Also, I'll be moving up from the south and while most of my family, including my parents are from Iowa, I am pretty southern. Are there many(any?) southern students at Iowa, and is it a welcoming environment for them?

Many southern students? Umm… you can take a look at this swell document on p. 16 to see the state-by-state enrollment. There are 56 students from GA:

As for Honors, there are a number of extensive threads on the topic here. Seek and ye shall find. There are a number of housing options, Daum being the obvious freshman choice. It’s adjacent to the Honors Center (is that its name??) and accessible to Burge, the big dorm with dining hall.

I knew that there had been quite an increase in Illinois’ representation over the last 10-15 years, but 6300 of the freshman class last year?! Thirty-eight years ago–when I was a frosh–I would venture a guess it was maybe 1500.

However, The University of Iowa has been the latest state flagship to really jack up the OOS tuition to the point where it ain’t such a great value anymore, which could plateau out the Illinois migration. Our next door neighbor’s D got the Scholars Award but even with that scholarship, the out-the-door cost per year was still in the high thirties. That’s a nearly $10,000 increase since 2005, when my D was a freshman. The neighbor’s D ended up at UIUC, where in-state costs about $31,000 per year–yikes! But that’s another story for another thread… :)

Still, if any college is worth the money (a debatable point these days), Iowa is. We all look at our days in Iowa City very fondly. Most Hawkeyes do!
