Is $20,000 in grants good or no???

Hello, i am a high school senior and i am trying to decide if i should go to UC Riverside or Cal State Fullerton. Including room and board, UC Riverside has a total cost of $28,000 per year. I just found out that they will give me $20,000 in grants that i dont have to pay back. So that leaves me paying about $8,000. Is that good?
The problem is, Cal State Fullerton wont know how much i will get in grants until next month, which is after the date in which i need to submit which college im going to. CSUF looks very good (Im going into Business) but i woudnt likely get on-campus housing b/c they only have 800 dorms for 30,000 students. In that case, i would need to get an apartment. If UCR gave me $20,000, does that mean Cal State Fullerton will give me something around that too. Cal State Fullerton is supposed to be cheaper, i think it is only $14,000 but idont want to risk going there if i dont know how much i will have to pay or where i will live....Help! Thanks!

I’d take that UCR offer anyday. Even if you do get a similar deal from CSF, UCR is a better school, and having to live off campus freshman year would suck.

Hmm, maybe your right, anyone else?

Yes UCR is your best choice. Also if they offered you 20,000 in grants that means they covered all of your fees, you’ll only have to take like 4000 loans. My first year they granted me 19000 in grants and I only took out 3500 in loans. Look at your the educational, tuition, and room and board fees only if they are covered under 20,000 your set the other fees like transportation, books, supplies, etc are estimates the school give you.

I think UCR is better than Cal State Fullerton. If you can pay for Cal State Fullerton but not for UCR, that’s the only reason you should go to Cal State Fullerton. If you can pay for UCR, you should go there.

What was your EFC?

If you got $20k in grants from UCR, then that suggests that your EFC is very low and the balance is being covered by loans, work-study, and maybe student/parent contribution.

Your aid at Fullerton isn’t likely going to be any better since the UCs and the Cal States seem to be following similar aid models this year…cover with grants, loans, w/s, and student/family contribution up to COA for low income kids.

I would probably pick UCR.

Since this was over a month ago I think the OP may have already chosen.
