Is 3 community service clubs out of a total of 5 too many?

Right now, I’m a freshman, and I’m planning ahead with the clubs I plan to participate in throughout high school. Based on this, in my senior year, I will have HOSA, a volunteer tutoring club, astronomy club, National Honor Society (which volunteers), and another club that I plan to found with my friends next year that raises money for a variety of charities and also crafts for them. So, 3 out of my 5 clubs too many community service clubs? And do you think 5 clubs in general is too many? (I’m also doing track in the spring) Thanks.

Five clubs is not necessarily too many. However, depending on where you want to attend college, be mindful about your volunteer work. A deeper commitment to one organization may be looked upon more favorably than a bunch of hours here and a bunch there. And rather than start your own charity, consider working with an existing charity. It is considered responsible (because you aren’t poaching each others resources and potential donors) and sustainable (because no one is impressed that you started a charity that will fade or die off after you and your friends move away to college).

Ok, thanks. I’ve heard from several people and on many websites that it shows leadership to start a club and coordinate events, etc. with it? Would the cons of starting the club I outlined overweigh the pros? None of the clubs at my school are similar to the one I want to start and they don’t do very much (ie meeting once a month for 20 minutes).

First of all, I think it’s great that you’re a freshman, and you’re already planning ahead. I do think that 5 clubs may be too many. Remember that in addition to track, throughout your high school years, you will also have to factor in time for advanced courses (possibly AP or IB), standardized testing studying, and more. If you enjoy community service, I would focus on the 2-3 clubs that you are most passionate about. I think starting your own club is a great idea! Again, just make sure to factor in your schedule, so you can manage your time efficiently.
