Is 4~5 AP classes too much 4 me?

ok well im from asia and i just came here in the 2nd semester of my sophomore year
i took standards(cuz i didnt know honors or AP stuff) and i got mostly As
now im a junior and im taking 4 honors classes and i still havent taken any AP classes yet
for next yr(senior year) im thinking about 4~5 AP classes:

AP Lit
AP Calc AB
AP Chem or APES
AP Euro/AP Psyc/AP Art History/AP USHIS
(maybe two of either science or social studies AP classes)

I have solid As in
govt Honors(didnt have credits so im doing it in my junior yr :()
US history(had to make up for sophomore yr)
English 11 Honors
Precalc Standard(moving to honors 2nd semester)
Chem Honors

i know im a year behind other regular juniors and my schedule is pathetic compared to them but i really want to take some AP classes since im having a reaaally easy junior year ...do u guys think id be okay?

I think you can handle it. I would take APES instead of Chem if you are feeling wary, but do not take AP Art History. I also don’t recommend Lit in place of Lang.

AP Psych would be the easiest of the ones you listed in the long list. APUSH and AP Euro are great classes, but a lot of memorization and a fair amount of busywork IMO.

thanks sooo much  but a friend told me that Lang was a junior class and i can take Lit if the teacher recommended English 12… i dont have problems writing or anything but i can be kinda slow on literature…

oh and ive lived in the US for like 6years when i was young and then went back 2 my country for like 8 years and im here again so i dont have major problems speaking and stuff… my grammer is actually better than others :)

should i still take Lang???

so do u think id have a lot of trouble in APUSH and AP Euro if im taking maybe… AP Lit and AP Chem? (i really dont think calc would be a problem…)

I’m currently taking 3 AP classes in my senior year, and it is a LOT of work (I have a 4.0 unweighted, and took tons of honors classes as a freshman through junior…this is my first year taking AP classes). Let me rephrase that…it’s a lot of work to take them and make A’s (which I thankfully still am). I’m taking AP Physics C (Elec AND Mech), AP Calculus BC, and AP Human Geography. I generally have 4-5 hours of homework a night, and the majority of it is for these three classes (I also take Latin, Government, and College Prep Writing). I personally think 3 AP classes per year is a heavy load…I can’t imagine taking 4 or 5 and maintaining a strong GPA.

If you have A’s, you should be able to handle it.

I’m taking 4 AP level classes (they’re actually university courses taken on campus at a top “public Ivy”, but I think they’re comparable to AP) in my senior year, maintaining a 3.9 unweighted grade, and having no trouble with the work. I don’t know what area of Asia you’re from, but classes are supposed to be more rigorous in Asia in general anyway. I don’t think you’ll have any trouble managing the work.

Also, I recommend taking AP Psych. AP Euro requires a lot of time invested in studying, or at least I think so.

thanks everybody  yeah im actually from s. korea where they have the worst and strictest education lol… right now i hardly have any homework for those classes and even if i have homework it takes me about 20mins to finish (except when writing essays :)) and (honestly…) its like really easy compared to where i came from!
i might as well take some easier APs like APHUG and AP psych since my govt teacher said i should do well in those… im now really worried about whether i should take english honors or AP Lit… but anyway thank you all sooooo much for helping out a lost kid :)!!!

Have you read much canonical Western literature?
Search “western canon literature bloom,” and click on the first link, it will probably be a list. If you have analyzed and understand at least ten novels from that giant list (maybe just search for novels you have read in school), I think that you will do fine in AP Lit.

wanton, thank you sooo much this is just what i needed!! i was going to kinda go through some books but i didnt know where to start … thank you so much <3… English is my nightmare these days lol!!

No problem! Haha and completely understandable, it’s admirable really that you’re trying so hard. I would probably just pout and do nothing if I had to move to South Korea during high school.

Oh, and most of AP Lit, and American high school English in general, focuses on C. The Democratic Age part and D. The Chaotic Age part, and almost exclusively on American and English literature. Unsurprisingly…

It’s a huge list, so I feel like narrowing down is probably a good thing to do.

yeah im really worried about which college im going to (korea or US) um… if im going to major in english literature and stuff like that, is it really important to take it? because i was really interested in English and social studies before i came here but then i got all discouraged cuz i sucked and suddenly im doing so well in science and math and im thinking i should major in chemistry (IF im going to a US college):)…

Just balance the APs with easy and hard ones. If you take AP Chem then take AP Psych with it. If you take AP Euro or APUSH then take APES.

Since you’re used to classes in S. Korea then AP classes should be “normal” level to you =p Maybe you should even go for Calc BC. It’s typically worth more college credits and if you’re good at math, why not?

If you want to major in English Literature, then it would be helpful for you to take AP Literature. If you do well in that class then you can assume that you could handle college level English courses. You will also learn much more and be far more prepared for college level English than if you took a different English class.

I think you should take AP Literature because it may help in your decision whether or not you’re leaning toward humanities or science/math in college. Most universities and colleges are stronger in either humanities or science/math, and it’d be nice for you to be able to select a college whose strength matches up with your interest. I’m not sure if you think you’ll be continuing your education after your B.A., but… yeah. Good to maximize future potential.

Oh, and you asked whether it’s important that you take the class. Humanities strong colleges will not really look for AP Literature in the same way that MIT looks for a student to have taken Calculus, humanities strong colleges generally just look for overall course rigor. Taking AP Literature would be increasing your course rigor though.

I know in most, if not all of Asian universities you cannot change your major but in the US you have the ability to if you realize you’re just not that interested. So for now, take a mix of AP classes to explore your interests while gaining some credits for college. When you apply to colleges in the US, adcoms know that there’s a great chance that you’ll change your major so try not to worry too much.

omg thank you so much that makes it so clear!!! so now im narrowing stuff into:

AP Lit/Eng Honors (still thinking about it b/c i kinda hate discussing)
AP Calc AB (dont want to stress out on math)
Physics Honors (still need credit for physics)
AP Chem
AP Psych
Spanish 2 (requirement)
orchestra
(i can take 8 classes and Calc counts as two)

one last question: i really love music and i really want to take orchestra but do you think its better to drop it and take another easy AP class like AP HUG or Art History?
i’ve taken orchestra and band since i was in 4th grade (in korea its like a club, not a class) and i was going to use it as a way to appeal to colleges in korea but does it work here too? or do they just look at all county and all state orchestras?

Well, it’s great that you’ve been in orchestra and band for such a long period of time. You should be really proud of yourself for these accomplishments and for being so self motivated.

If you’re applying to ivy/top schools then big awards would mean more. if it were me, I would stay with music to bring happiness into myself.
