Is a 1430 SAT enough? Chance please? Admitted students, what do you think?

Hi! My DD is a rising senior, very interested in UMD. Has toured and loved it. We are in-state, from Frederick County.

She has a 1430 Superscore SAT (730V, 700M). Enough?

She will take SAT again in August. She took the June ACT for the first time but is taking forever to come in.

3.97 un, 4.7 w, 6 APs and 1 DE by graduation. Varsity sport, captain, NHS, etc.

Good chance? Suggestions for other schools she should also apply to?

Thanks, go Terps!

I don’t engage in chancing, but for suggestions of other schools to apply to, it would be helpful to know what your DD is looking to major in (if she knows)…

As a CS major at UMD, I have enough confidence to say that your DD has a great shot at UMD.

Note that there are LEPs (Limited Enrollment Programs), however, and that may lower the chance of your DD’s acceptance chance depending on her major.

Currently, LEPs are: Business; Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Chemistry and Environmental Sciences and Policy-Biodiversity and Conservation; Communication; Criminology and Criminal Justice; Engineering; Government and Politics; Journalism; Psychology

But still, with her solid GPA of 4.7, I’m still pretty sure she will get in even with LEPs.

She is interested in everything! Really likes STEM stuff, and attended the WIE Day at UMD. Was on her schools Robotics Team.

She wants to go someplace that has Engineering, although she’s not sure that’s her major. We know it’s competitive, esp. for the Math. She’s gone up to AP Calc AB with all A’s. She will continue to focus on math for the next SAT in August.

She also loved Chemistry and Environmental Science classes. And she loves to work with people, teach, wants to Save The World, lol…

She wants someplace vibrant, with internship opportunities, students who are excited about learning, and hopefully bigger with lots of majors and classes. Her small HS frustrated her with lack of offerings at times.

Her Dad’s and my preference is someplace safe, not too far away

I had the new SAT score of 1450 and still got in. I’m sure you will get in as well.

As @HardOREasy pointed out, admissions for LEP’s such as engineering are separate consideration from the general university admissions. Engineering is particularly competitive for direct/initial admission as an incoming freshman, but after you matriculate, internal transfer admission to engineering is guaranteed if you meet the “gateway” requirements satisfactorily.

I am a huge fan of Maryland engineering (and Maryland in general, haha) so I will of course give that my highest recommendation - definitely checks all the boxes of your D’s wish list! Since you mentioned that she loves people and wants to “save the world,” she would love Engineers Without Borders. They do awesome service projects around the world and Maryland has a very active chapter. http://www.ewb.umd.edu For info in general about Maryland engineering, check out http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-maryland-college-park/1732708-everything-you-want-to-know-about-engineering-at-maryland-p1.html
I would highly recommend that your daughter continue participation with the robotics team to “demonstrate interest in engineering” as that is definitely considered strongly with Maryland’s engineering admissions. Stats alone nor admission to the university in general does not ensure direct admission to engineering as space is limited.

For other recommendations of schools with good engineering programs that are not far, I would look at UDelaware for chemical engineering since Dow Chemical has a plant based in Newark, DE. How far outside of Maryland are you willing to look? Rutgers in Northern NJ and UVA have really good engineering programs. VTech obviously is good for engineering, but fwiw, my son was not interested in tech-based universities such as VTech or Georgia Tech due to lack of diversity in student body…

Thank you!
