I just got the first semester report card for one of my kids and it's chock full of B+'s. Would that be a 3.5 or a 3.35? I think the school once said they count it as a 3.5 but do colleges recalculate the grade points? Also, do colleges count any elective grades? [ethics? computer programming? film? lol]

B+ =3.3 thru 3.35 depending on the school

yeah, at my school it's a 3.3.... you should be able to find the grading scale on the school's website, and yes, usually all classes do count in the gpa unless it is a pass/fail course or another exception similar to that

Heidi, My daughter's high school transcript is chock full of B+'s. Her high school uses a 4 point scale to compute the GPA with everything from B- to B+ counted as a "3" in the GPA computation. If it's an honors or AP class, it's counted as a 4. (Honors/AP A's are "5"). It is my understanding that most high schools in Calif. use this system because that is how the U of Calif. system computes GPA's. Other states and school districts may vary.

I've been asking colleges as we visit about this and the answers vary. About 50% say they will compute their own GPA using just core classes (art, pe, religion, etc. will be dropped). Most of those seem to use a 4 point scale like my daughter's class, although I have been assured that they will take note of the difference between a B+ and B- in classes and be happier to see a B+ in an honors class than a B+ in a regular class.

The rest of the schools seem to just go with whatever the GPA on the transcript is --- so it pays to find out how your high school computes things and keep that in mind when looking at "average GPA's" for colleges.

my colleged used to do 4=A, 3=B, 2=C, 1=D, 0=F.. now we do 4, 3.5, 3, 2.5, 2.0, 1.5, 1.0, .5 . 94-100=4, 88-93=3.5, 82-87=3, etc... all schools are different...

It does seem to me that the 4.0 system isn't fair --- there's a big difference between a B+ and a B- and they shouldn't be weighed the same.

well, the thing is, you normally get your fair share of both +'s and -'s and it averages out the same in the end.. for the most part..

our HS offers no extra grade points for a plus, not decrements for a minus. The UCs count a + as a .3 and a minus as a negative .3 So, a B+ is 3.3 and and B- is 2.7.

This seems to be a monthly topic. And the answer is always that every hs and every college counts grades differently. I think that's why an up-to-date school profile is so important, so the ad coms at colleges can see how the high school calulates their grades and the rigour of the program. In the end, does it really matter? Your grades are what they are, it's not like you can change them or complain because another school has more lenient scoring.

Thanks so much for the replies! They were very helpful. I guess I was just trying to figure out what schools to maybe visit this summer, though my junior s is not too interested in visiting schools, which is yet another issue for another day. He is flat out refusing to visit anyplace this spring break and finally admitted to me that he'd checked "no mail" on the psats. [On which he scored easily in the national merit semifinalist range.] Will be interesting to see where he ends up.
