I was looking at the salary’s and became concerned. I love psychology, but if it isn’t profitable I may have to reconsider my major.
Both those majors lend themselves to getting a masters or PHD to make a “profitable” living. It depends what you are wanting to do. Most of the adults that I know that majored in those programs went on for higher degree either right away or once they got a position where a higher level degree was needed. Others use their psych degree for entry level positions or don’t use the degree at all. What do you want to do? Will you go to grad school? What is “profitable” to you?
It’s not profitable but it’s rewarding for many. It’s important and it’s respected. Psychologists at the PhD level can be more so. The best bet is to follow it into academia and tenure track. If you can get to that level you can have a comfortable life and do meaningful work. My friends in the field also have practices and also prof at Brown. They have little financial worries.
If you want to practice in the field providing counseling, you’ll need another degree. I know several with masters degrees in private practice that make $80-100K
