I’m leaning towards studying biology, but I’ve been interested in anthropology for quite a while too. I’ve read that a lot of the classes for biology and anthropology are the same, but it seems that anthropology isn’t regarded as highly. Would it be dumb to just major in anthropology, or should I double (major in biology and anthropology?
I hope you can start off taking some classes in anthropology. Then decide. It is a fascinating subject. I also hope that you do not run into pressure for a more “practical” major. It is still perfectly alright to study a subject you are interested in. A BA in anthropology will give you access to jobs in and out of that field, and to grad and professional schools.
No it’s not a useless major.
I find it surprising that there would be much overlap between courses required for a bio major and an anthro major. It is definitely not the case at schools I am familiar with.
It might depend on which anthro field you are interested in. For example, cultural anthro might not have much overlap, but biological (physical) anthro might.
^Yeah, this was going to be my comment. A lot of colleges focus primarily on cultural anthro at the undergrad level, which is why most schools don’t show much overlap. But in biological anthro there actually is a lot.
