I'm wondering if anyone here is a Communication Studies major at UCSD. I visited the campus about a week ago and I am on the fence about it. The courses they offer in their Comm department seem a little......different. I realize that UCSD is a great school all around, but I would love to hear personal thoughts/opinions from people who are in the program. How do you like it?

I like it, it's theoretical and a fresh analysis of the world compared to what you're probably used to (unless your parents are academics).

Essentially, it is a blend of socio-cultural anthropology, sociology, and linguistics (though they tend to call this cognitive science =/)

If either of those interest you separately, focus on that major. As you would expect, this major is broad rather than deep.

Obviously, this is differentiated from a Communications major, which tends to focus on practical studies of corporate and organizational communication (PR, advertising, etc.). This major is offered at SDSU.

Sunshine,

I'm not sure if Mruser is talking about the same thing you were asking for.

Thank you both. I think that you hit the nail on the head mruser, I think that I am looking for something a bit more specialized. I'm looking for more hands-on training in advertising, PR, journalism, etc. Thanks for your help!
