I decided not to apply to Penn after all, so I'm only applying to HYP and Columbia

^ lol. Poor Cornell, Brown, and Dartie :(

I applied to 4: Columbia, Yale, Cornell, and Penn. Got rejected Columbia ED, so I don't have much confidence in my prospects for Yale, but I'd be ecstatic to go to any of the Ivies I applied to.

If you applied to all of the Ivies, I give you props for surviving the application process. I don't know if I could've been able to retain my sanity.

Yale's application actually wasn't that bad, in retrospect. I took a hard look at Penn's and was like... yeah, I'm not doing this.

^ yep, me too.

and honestly...write about a Penn professor? that's kind of stuck-up imo

I'm applying to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Dartmouth.

To be honest, I didn't do a whole ton of research except for looking through the brochures/viewbooks they sent me. I did look into Cornell a little bit, but something just didn't seem right for me. Part of the reason I'm applying to 4 is that there is a very good chance I'll get rejected from them, so applying to more gives me a slightly better chance that I'll at least get into one of them. The other reason is that I live far away and haven't had a chance to actually visit any of them (a very important factor for me), so I won't be able to narrow down the list until I actually get a chance to visit.

Yeah, I agree. I'm not applying to any ivys, but I don't understand how the heck they would expect you to know a professor there! My friends either called up their friends at Penn to ask, or picked some random professor off the website.

I'm into Chicago and Gtown. I applied to HPY and Columbia.

Columbia and Yale have a personal fit that I like. Princeton has the Woodrow Wilson school. I know the least about Harvard, but I don't think anyone would say that Harvard is weak in poli sci, so it's not all about the reputation.

That said, if I wouldn't have gotten into schools early, then I would have applied to all the ivies minus Cornell. I wouldn't want to risk being one of the unlucky qualified applicants turned down.

EDIT

And I agree about Penn's application. I was planning on applying to Penn even after getting early results, but after learning about their essay topics, I wasn't about to go any research some person that I don't really know or care about. Who are they kidding? They are ASKING you to lie and bull*****. Can they even fill their incoming class with kids who legitimately have favorite professors?

in regards to penn - its not like all the people reading the apps know all the professors either, so they are just reading a random essay written by doing an hour of research - a more personal essay would definetly give a better picture of the applicant.

then again if they wanted to weed out people who didnt reeeallly wana go there, then they succeeded

they just want incoming students to know something about penn...you know, not those kids who get into harvard and don't realize that its not actually in boston until they get there

I held off on the Penn application until the last day, but it really wasn't that bad. I was talking to an older friend who said the combination of "name a prof" and "Why Penn?" sounded more typical of grad school applications. I ended up looking at the faculty directory on the Wharton site and basing it on areas of research and recent publications.

The Penn application was one of the more labor-intensive, but ultimately a satisfying one to complete. I loved the autobiography essay, I wrote about a topic that really came from my heart.

Yale & Dartmouth only. Was going to apply to Brown & Cornell too but got into Yale before I finished(started) those apps.

Ephemeral, that's really exciting. Congrats. I was really hoping to get in to Columbia ED so I wouldn't have to do more apps, but that didn't turn out so well haha.

But I agree with everyone that the Penn app was pretty intense. My autobiography bit wasn't great, in my opinion, but I was glad to add another personal piece to the application.

Congrats Ephemeral2! Are you still going to consider Dartmouth if you get in? Or did you already withdraw your app?

I don't say this to everybody, but I always thought your profile/stats/personality was particularly well suited for Dartmouth. Best of luck with your UNC Morehead finalist thing too!

I had been admitted to MIT early action, while I applied to uchicago and caltech early action (deferred from both schools).

But I've applied to all ivy league along with stanford except cornell, brown, and dartmouth. Cornell is just too far up north (too cold) and isolated than the others, same for dartmouth. and brown doesn't have what I'm looking for.

Dartmoose, I fell in love with Dartmouth the moment I walked onto campus. If I am admitted and get financial aid near equal to that of Yale (Yale is giving me $45,000 in scholarship), I would turn down Yale.

My mom wants me to apply to all of them but sincerely i want HYP Columbia, Brown, Cornell

Just Harvard and Yale for me, but if I could go back in time I would also apply to Princeton, Cornell and Brown. Princeton I didn't apply because I missed the deadline (lol). Cornell and Brown I just never researched, but I like them a lot after reading about them... :-/ Oh well, at least I got MIT :)

I figured Harvard and Yale were enough, so I skipped on Princeton.
(Though I also missed the deadline, haha)
I added Amherst and Duke at the last moment... and I'm REALLY happy I applied to those schools. Duke has become one of my top choices in a very short time.
