Haha to be honest, I am not so good with history. I enjoy it but I can never remember enough about anyone to keep people straight from each other. That said I really enjoy the statue of TJ at WM - he just looks so regal… and I am definitely down with the number three. Hello 3rd president - you can’t go wrong.

I actually have read some of Founding Brothers though, and I might have seen some of the John Adams film.

I am terrified to wear the colors green and gold together for fear of it jinxing me, or someone thinking I’m being overly confident - even though, once again, it’s not like anyone here knows what the colors of WM are haha.

Are there a lot of people applying from your high school?

I know what you mean. I want to order a W&M sweatshirt so badly, but I’d look like a fool if I wore it and then didn’t get in.

Yes, there are a lot of kids at my school applying. And, unfortunately, most of my school’s ED applicants are also white females. Northern Virginia is a horribly competitive area.

^But W&M takes a lot of kids from there. I’m the only person from my school who applied ED, but there were probably many applicants from my area. And most of the schools in my area are better than mine, so I’m freaking out.

@ Rixs: haha I am pretty sure everyone is freaking out… and it comes so soon… like the letters will be sent out next week! Agh!

@ songbird: I also would really like to buy a sweatshirt. I tried to tell myself that then, if I don’t get in, I’ll at least get the pleasure of burning it. But I decided that no amount of fire can outweigh the opportunity costs of the curse that would be placed upon me…

Ha ha every time I do something I like to think about how much better it would be to be doing it while wearing WM paraphernalia … like “Wow I really love this kickboxing class… but it would be so much better in a WM shirt” or “Gee, stopping at this stop light would be rad if I had WM bumper sticker” or even “Gross, that hobo just hit on me, but it would be so much more understandable if I were wearing a WM sweatshirt”

So where else will you all be applying to (that is, if you get deferred)? My D will apply to UVA, Bucknell, Boston College, maybeee Boston U…no real safeties that she loves at this point.

And, what was the deciding factor that placed W&M at the top of your list? For my D, it was just a feeling. This was the place that she felt most comfortable…the most comfortable step from her existing world on to the next journey.

@terig: My back-ups (so to speak) are Emory, Macalester, Brown, Wellesley, Hamilton, Pomona, and Mary Washington. I’m also toying with the idea of applying to Middlebury.

And for me, the thing that placed W&M above all those other schools is the fact that Thomas Jefferson went there. (Since all of these schools have good Japanese/EAS programs)

I’ve only applied to safeties thus far…I looked all over VA for an affordable school that appealed to me, but found none other than W&M…I applied to JMU as a safety.

I just don’t know how can I possibly afford an OOS school, even with Finaid.

I’m in that margin where I’m good enough to be accepted, but not good enough to get generous merit aid.

Anyone have any ideas for me? I want to major in English, but I definitely want to do Foreign Language (especially Japanese) and I want to at least get some foundations classes in art.

I’m just at a loss.

If I get into W&M, everything’s good. With some basic Finaid, I can come up with the rest…

If not…I just don’t want to do. I want a school that’s competitive enough for me (I’ve lacked significant challenges in high school), but I also need one that won’t bankrupt my parents. -headdesks-

Anyway, I chose W&M because I just liked the feel the best. The competitive academic environment, the serene location, and just the general feel I got on the tour made it my number one choice.

I am waiting on William and Mary to apply to any other schools but I’d look at UVA, Georgetown and the like as well as some in-state safeties if I don’t get in. It wasn’t in the mail today; how late do you think they wait to send them out? Maybe they mailed them Friday.

@Rixs: I hope we both get in… then we might be in the same Japanese class!
But, if worst comes to worst, let’s see… I know that both VT and UVA also have Japanese.

@NOVAJunge: The W&M rep posted earlier in this thread that when they mail out the letters, they will put a notification on the college’s admission page. Which has only resulted in me checking the blasted page every three hours or so. -_-

ah! how do you guys feel about the fact that WM only does snail mail?

Personally, I think the suspense of the extra few days is going to kill me. Also the fact that I will be able to immediately tell if its nice fat juicy acceptance letter, or a puny shriveled reject one when I open my mail box… I wonder what size deferrals are…

@maspatatas: Actually, one of my neighbors was accepted ED a couple of years ago, and according to her, the acceptance envelope is also thin. At least, it was a couple of years ago…

But, personally, I am not a fan of the snail-mail policy. So much uncertainty! I’d rather log into a website at a specific time and date to find out than receive a letter sometime in “early December”.

Rixs - I wouldn’t completely rule out private schools. The college counselor at my daughter’s school said (as did our financial advisor) that private schools are often able to meet demonstrated need better than state schools. If you think your family might qualify for aid, then you might end up with a better deal from a private school. This is why we’re okay with our daughter applying to Bucknell. Speaking of Bucknell, our next door neighbor goes there and majors in Japanese Studies. I don’t know anything about the program, but I do know she got a great financial aid package (grant rather than loans).

drama-songbird - thank you for warning us about the possibility of a thin envelope! We were just talking about how we hoped there would be a large envelope filled with everything a future W&M student would need! My daughter applied to the National High School Institute last summer and her acceptance came while we were away on a college visit. The first thing she asked her brother on the phone was “is it a big envelope or a small one?” He answered, “big – and it says on the outside ‘I went to college before I graduated from high school’” She just burst into tears. So now, she has the idea that thin envelopes bare bad news. I’ll have to set her straight on that! Thanks!

My parents don’t want me out of state. That’s the real problem here. I’ve tried selling it to them, but my dad has “daddy’s little girl” syndrome. He’s praying I get into W&M so that I’ll stop bothering him about other schools, even if they’re financial safeties.

-headdesks-

I’ll be freaking out if the envelope is thin. My first college acceptance came in a huge black envelope with the school’s initials on the front.

I’ll be really scared to open W&M’s…the uncertainty will kill me until the very end.

Consulted my parents. They also said that the neighbor’s envelope said “Congratulations!” or something similar on the outside. Again, I don’t know if this is true or if they still do that, but just thought I should throw that out there.

The ED acceptance came in a large manilla envelope with “welcome” and “wm.edu” on the front. It contained a folder inside with a letter and some paperwork about returning a deposit.

So, we’ll be looking for an envelope with writing on the outside! I guess bad news would be a small envelope with n-o-t-h-i-n-g but your name and address.

Rixs, I’m with your parents, actually. Virginia has great schools and there really is no reason to go anyplace else. William and Mary is a nationally respected institution and any parent would be thrilled for their son or daughter to go to school there! Unfortunately, my daughter only likes two of the schools in the whole state of Virginia, so we have had to venture out a little bit. For what it’s worth, her out of state options really hold little interest for her, and like your dad, we’re praying that she gets into William and Mary so this won’t be an issue.

haha I wish I could help you all with coming up with other schools, but I’m over here in the west and so there’s probably a different circle of school we look at. However I will point out that a lot of you Virginia folk would be looking at some serious aid packages if you applied over here because people from the east rarely do.

@terig: My parents are letting me apply to Bucknell too for similar reasons.

@everyone else: Thanks for the envelope heads up… and AH! There are only like two days left! Do you think its possible that they would even send it out tomorrow? My birthday is actually coming up and this could def make it or break it. I am a little relieved that we don’t have to wait for the 15th though. A lot of my friends applied ED or EA places, and won’t know til then.

I am going to have to come up with something supremely epic to do if I do get in.
