Is AP worth it for College Tuition?

Will AP credits in College save you tuition money?
If I take half the year in Freshman year, do we save alot of money?
Generally how much money do we save for one AP credit in College?
Simply, I guess I'm asking; how much does a college class cost (private and public)?

I know its alot of questions. Hope someone can help me!

-Ray

Well if private school tuition is about $30,000 and most people take 8 classes over the course of the year, I'd say each class costs about exactly $7500. Except....not.

The college I'm looking at would have charged me about $800 tuition + the cost of the books for an eight credit course, but through AP, I only paid $125 total. It worked out pretty well.

But I think the AP tests are mostly for prestige. Most gen ed requirements can be satisfied by courses required for your major anyway... You'll have to look specifically at the college you want to get a good picture of how much you can save.

Wow, ceecee, where do you go?? XD

Well, the school I want to go to will give me 36 hours. Which is a whole friggin' year, man atleast! I can do... a lot of stuff! Or just graduate early (like I'd really want to enter 'the real world' early) XD If you are really trying to save, then yes. Do as many APs as you can handle. If your school has an academic team, join it and pay money to test in whatever subjects yall study.

I too am wondering where ceecee went.

-Ray

If I get into my dream school (UT Austin), I will recieve credit for and get an "A" in Rhetoric & Comp. and in American History, all because I recieved a 5 in each. That means a lot to me--at least a savings of around $500.

I know one guy who took a bucketload of APs and entered my state university (LSU) as a sophomore.

It's a state school... and the total tuition cost is probably closer to 900. I just did a rough estimate of 100-some odd dollars per credit X 8. So 800 is the least amount that I saved. I just didn't want to make it like I was exaggerating my savings since I didn't know for certain.

AP Exams are extremely worth the trouble. You get to miss out on the introductory classes in the beginning of freshman year, which would ultimately cost you a lot of money! Also, these prerequisites are likely to be huge lectures and not the type of classes you really want to be in.

Word! I'm taking 11 when its all said and done.

Problem is that I have to pay for some of my AP Courses (Online). My school only offers biology, US history, Calculus, and English. I'm taking the Bio and Calculus. The remaining AP courses, my parents are paying for, which is approx $400 each. Then there is the exam fees.

So is it worth it?

-Ray

yes, worth it. But not for the money you can save on your total college costs. Worth it for the superior experience you are likely to have in an AP course, for being able to demonstrate a higher level of rigor on your apps, to skip intro classes in order to take classes you are more interested in, to have flexability to do things like double major or study-abroad and still graduate on time. You only save money if you use AP credits to graduate from college early, which most people don't.

Xur, have you considered self study?

Yah, that's it. When you get 36 hours you enter as a sophmore (+) and that's what I plan on doing. Someone like me really needs that sort of flexibility. I agree with texas.

So xur, whatevers more important to you.
