My daughter is in 10th grade. Not sure yet if she wants to go to medical school but considering. Is the NYLF forum for 10 days in San Francisco ($2,800 cost) useful? Have any of your kids attended? Any feedback from the parents or the students that have knowlege would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Admissions to college? To medical school, no.

My D attended the NYLF last year in S.F. and had a great time! As far as it being a benefit for college admissions, I think it’s better than nothing. It’s not the most impressive program and doesn’t provide any direct shadowing experience, but is valuable in exposing kids to the health care professions. Additionally, my D made some great friends who all seemed to be somewhat interested in the health care arena. My D also thought it was neat to stay in the UC Berkeley dorms, and we felt this would give her a feel of what college life will be like. Yes, it’s a bit pricey, but considering that you can get your kid out of the house for 10 days doing something somewhat productive during the summer is, in my opinion, definitely worth it! We’re trying to convince my S to do the same this summer (you can tell we’re all procrastinators…which is why it’s good that NYLF is still open; they’re not too selective!) and hope that he’s agreeable to this. Besides, San Francisco is BEAUTIFUL year round and we always love going there–there you go, another reason to go to NYLF!! Good luck. Hope it all works out for you and D.

Thank you for your input. Wish you and your children well.

No, anything that depends on your ability to pay will not be valued in admissions purposes.
