Barnard has a higher acceptance rate than Columbia so why don't more girls apply?

Basic concept. If no arbitrage is taking place to equate the two rates, then there must be a difference. Barnard may pass off as part of Columbia in eyes of the average Joe; there’s a difference when it comes to corporate recruiting and grad schools placements.

Lots of girls apply. However, no boys apply, which obviously impacts the acceptance rate rather dramatically right there. Put in an equal # of male applicants its acceptance rate becomes in the teens.

It is an all girls school, not everyone wants that. When I was looking at these things it accepted the lowest % of any all girls school. But this mode of education is simply less popular in these days of ubiquitous coeducation. And it’s a liberal arts college, not a university.

Its higher admit rate has some ramifications, externally per above but also internally, which may additionally deter some would-be applicants, sort of a perpetuating cycle . However it probably can’t get much more selective as a unisex school.

Monydad’s response was terrific. I would also suggest anyone considering the two schools visit them both … they are both terrific schools … with very different feels … and I’d guess most applicants will have a pretty clear preference for one or the other. And one of the great things about both schools is if a student chooses one thay can take advantage of a lot of the additional options at the other.

One has SAT ranges significantly higher than the other’s.
