Is Baylor a suitcase school?

Ds considering applying to Baylor from the Northeast. Given that he would be very far from home and not able to go home until holidays, want to make sure the dorms/campus doesn’t clear out on the weekends. Would love to hear from any current students. Also, is there a requirement to take foreign language in the undergrad core? (had many years of language and is tired of it) Thank you.

A lot of the kids are from out of state so there are a lot of kids who hardly ever go home. We live 3 hours away and he has been home a couple of times this year and at Christmas and Thanksgiving. There is a huge foreign language requirement which many of the advisors told us to take at local colleges because it is hard at Baylor. I know it is great to be able to speak another language but it can be hard at the college level.

Lots of kids from around here go to Baylor.

I see them at church on Sunday mornings. A LOT. But I don’t know if that makes it a suitcase school or if it is just those kids in general.

@Empireapple --have you visited campus?

carachel2…thank you for taking the time to reply. I think we have crossed Baylor off the list due to the foreign language requirement in the core. My son is also a little concerned about all the rules and religion at Baylor. My ds is just tired of studying language and I agree, once we are paying for it, if it has nothing to do with your major, why take it. Still interested in Texas…looking at TCU and maybe Texas A&M!

My son who had 3 years of German in HS decided to take Japanese at Baylor on the recommendation for his friend. He loved it! The professor was excellent. He joined the Japanese Student Association and took on a leadership role. They took several trips to Dallas for Asian culture events. Involvement with this organization ended up being one of his favorite extracurricular activities. His friend ended up minoring in Japanese.
