“I have always assumed that a bachelor’s degree in biology qualifies you to go to graduate or medical or veterinary school and learn whatever will lead to an actual career. I don’t see any problem with this, as long as you like biology, have the grades to go on to graduate or medical school, can afford to continue your education after getting a bachelor’s (no debt for undergrad would be nice), and you spend some time thinking about what career you intend to head towards. I have wondered whether some biology majors end up in law school.”
I would say a biology major fulfills many of the requirements for applying to graduate, medical, veterinary school etc. It won’t qualify you. Other than that I agree with the statement.
So out of curiosity, what can one do to make his bio degree more marketable? Would pairing it with a minor such as buisiness, economics, Comp sci, or statistics help?
@Savage101 I will say Computer science will be no doubt helpful. I read an article that said that there were 10 times more job openings for CS than the # of CS graduates in an year.
But then, not all of those openings are for undergrad degrees. But it’s definitely a better prospect than a bio or chem undergrad major! :^)
But the thing is, an undergraduate degree won’t get you too far. Good thing is that you’re going to attend an undergrad that isn’t too big, so you will probably be OK with graduate school admissons.
For now, though, I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Go to your college, take a variety of classes, and find your passion!
Thanks @XCBikeSwimSleep for the advice. I’m not worried about it, I just want to have an idea about what I ca or cannot do with a bio major. I love biomedical sciences, and I’m pretty sure I want to goto med school, but I was just curious what other doors would be openned with a degree of this type.
