Is Bowdoin or Colby more hippie?

I like both of these schools a lot. However, I mesh better with the "hippie" type than the typical prep school New England vibe. I know that both of these schools are very preppy, but which one would have more of the crunchy feel that I am looking for?

Thanks.

Probably Colby. Although you might want to check out Hampshire, Vassar, and a few others.

From another thread:

LAC alternatives:

Bard
Vassar
Wesleyan
Colorado College
Oberlin
Skidmore
Beloit
Grinnell
Kenyon

Reed, Swarthmore (extra intense, academically)
Hampshire, Bennington, Warren Wilson, Sarah Lawrence (if you’d consider someplace more arty or experimental)

All right, so that’s one for Colby, 0 for Bowdoin.

Thanks for the other information too.

Any other ideas? Which school is more hippie?

Bump, I need some answers!

Did you post your question in the forum for each school?

I think Bowdoin is a little more hippie than Colby, but the hippier option in Maine is Bates.

In this day and age, how do you define hippie? Having come through the original era, I don’t see it.

Yeah, it’s an imprecise term. I’m referring to a combination of a granola/outdoors/natural aesthetic, liberal social views, and various cultural choices in terms of food, music, etc.

If you consider it an actual college, there is Antioch.

Call that progress!

I suppose that by hippie, I mean people that are into outdoor activities, organic food, interesting music, etc…

Neither of them are really hippie schools… Maybe Colby is more what you’re looking for though.

If Maine’s your thing, vote #2 for Bates. If not, vote #2 for tk’s list. Bowdoin and Colby? More Polo and Lauren than Peace and Love.

There seem to be a fair number of people fitting that description at most LACs, but frankly, Bowdoin and Colby do tend to be fairly preppy. From our HS, they tend to attract cleancut athletic types. As does Bates. Have you considered Hampshire, Oberlin, Wesleyan, Middlebury, Bard, Vassar, and maybe Colorado College?

Brown is very hippie.

I agree with 1190. Neither Bowdoin nor Colby is hippie. They are both outdoorsy, but in an LL Bean kind of way. If you want hippie, look at TKs list.
