Is it starting to get up there with schools like Tufts and BC? I hear BU is trying to be more selective and competitive to gain a better reputation.

bu has an excellent reputation and is getting more competitive because the quality of applicants is increasing with each and every class year. and please, dont ever say that bu is “trying to get up there with bc,” especially to a bunch of bu students. it’s offensive. as far as academics, research, graduate schools, etc goes, we far surpass them. especially in the fact that bc lacks the wide variety of “major” possibility that bu has (over 250 majors). you must be referring to us news rankings which is dependent on nonsense criteria like alumni donations and campus location.

^ditto

Honestly though, BU and BC are quite different schools, it’s hard to compare the two and not take into account all the different factors that are present at each. Additionally, if your trying to compare academics, I still believe that BU and BC are too close to be able to definitively say that one is better than the other. Each school has its strengths and weaknesses .

In response to your question, yes BU is getting more competitive. The statistics of the incoming classes are increasing each and every year as well as the number of applicants. A few of my professors have even said that the quality of students is improving. Also my stats were above average when I applied to BU and now I’m a student here.
BU also just implemented a 10-year strategic plan which addresses such things as improving the reputation of the undergraduate and graduation programs, quality of faculty, student life, among other things. There have also been many visible improvements such as the building of stuvi2 (high rise residence) and the commonwealth ave project which was just completed. Not too mention agganis arena and fitrec were just built a mere few years ago. Like any other school, we’re currently waiting out the economic crisis before continuing with new initiatives but overall, it’s a good time to be at BU.
