Is Bullying a good essay topic?

For the college i'm applying to, the topic is to talk about one obstacle you've been through in your life, and how it affected your life.

During my sophomore year, this guy that sat next to me in my english class was harassing me for being a Muslim. He called me names, hurt me, and talked crap about me to other people. I dealt with it for 6 months before finally getting the courage to tell my english teacher about it, because I did not want to get in any violent acts. So i told the teacher and she talked to him, and he never talked to me again.

Also i would talk about how this changed my life, my view of myself and others, and how it influenced the decisions i've made.

So basically I would write this in a much more personal matter, with a lot of emotional stuff.
Is this a good idea? Or is it too much

Overall I wouldn’t usually pick bullying for a subject. The prompt says exactly ‘through your life’ and this is just one instance? Aside from that, it does seem to fit the prompt pretty well, and the bullying is very pointed on your religion/culture/race, so that expands the topic. I think this can work well. Take the opportunity to be analytical about it and show us how you are today because of it.

Make sure the essay doesn’t come across as I was bullied feel bad for me and pick me. This is what colleges don’t want to see. If you stay away from this you should be good.

I like what Swimmer576 mentioned, but I would not do the essay just because of the topic. I would write it and ask peers to take a look at it as see if they think you are trying to get sympathy from readers.
