Is commuting a good choice?

That 90 minutes on Google maps doesn’t take into account the Belt Parkway. With the Marine Park construction, ther’s not a time in the last 2 years that I haven’t spent LOTS of time in traffic. Likewise the merge with the Southern State. It’s rare to be able to fly from Valley Stream to Wantagh… you WILL be spending time in traffic!!

And, of course, that presumes you have a car. Otherwise you’ll be on the LIRR to Penn, then changing at either Hicksville or Huntington, waiting for a shuttle to take you from the StonyBrook train station to the school… in the pouring rain, in bitter cold, on icy platforms. Every. Single. Day

Hunter is your best choice.

Please listen to the adults here, not the kids in your classes who have their eye on a dorm without mom and dad. You have big, but expensive, ambitions. Hunter will get you the education you want with the price tag you need.

To do list:

Today

Go to HESC and apply for the excelsior scholarship

Tomorrow

Contact Stony Brook about getting a refund for your housing deposit.

Make an appointment with the pre-dental advisor at Hunter

I think Hunter is an excellent plan. Do apply for the Excelsior Scholarship today if you haven’t already. It’s a tuition grant of up to $6k. If you already have $3k from TAP and Pell, you may get another $3k from the Excelsior program.

Thank you all very much! After a long night of thinking I’ve decided to go to hunter. I did apply for tap and exelsiour but it will take some time to process the information so I don’t now right know how much they give me. Also I contacted Stony brook an hour ago about my deposit refund. I paid 3 deposits: tuition, orientation and housing.650$ so I hope they will understand my circumstances and will be able to return at least partial deposit. Some of my friends go to hunter college, I asked them about it. And they seem to like it. Finally, it is all on me, if I will study hard enough to get in a dental school. Not on the school name.

If your family made less than $110k and you are on track to graduate in 2-years you should have no problem getting the remainder of your tuition paid. Unfortunately due to the popularity of the program there are a lot of applications to be processed. Be patient.

Congrats Dina. I think you made a very smart choice. Best of luck with pre-dental!

Two Russian immigrants who went to CUNYs (CCNY and Brooklyn College) and eventually became Rhodes scholars. Eugene Shenderov (Brooklyn College) got his MD from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine after completing his PhD from Oxford. Lev Sviridov also holds a D.Phil from Oxford University.

Congratulations!!!

And you should have no problem getting your deposit back.

Now plan a day to tour Hunter-- and get yourself that T shirt!!!

Im currently enrolled into Stony Brook University. With that being said i have a 30-40 minute ride back and fourth everyday and it is a pain. I generally have to leave an hour and 1/2 early just to make it to class with 10 minutes to spare. My class starts at 10am, im out of the house by 8:30am. Having to park in student parking lot and wait for the bus when it is absolutely freezing outside is a pain as well. Many times taking the bus back to south p took 20 minutes alone around 4pm. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time for commuting if you decide to go that route. If you are not willing to spend more time commuting than learning maybe Stony Brook would not be your best option.
