Is engineering for me?

So I am interested in math, science, and engineering and would like to pursue a career with that sort of focus, but I am worried that Engineering might be too specific and perhaps even a bit limiting. I am a rising senior and am looking for more information now so I can have a more clear view when applying to schools. I think my core interest is the intersection of engineering and technology with public policy and economics, and I don't want to sacrifice my study in economics/public policy for the workload of an engineering major.

Right now I think it might be better to get my undergrad in math or physics (I like math more and I think I am more talented in it, taking multivariable next year) so I can double major with public policy or econ, then maybe later get a grad degree in engineering management or operations research or something like that. Am I on the right track with this idea, or would it be better just to get an engineering undergrad degree?

I am also looking at OR undergrad programs (ie Cornell, GTech,Berkeley,Columbia) which sound like they'd fit perfectly but I want to keep my options open since not many schools offer OR undergrad. Is OR the best fit for me given my interests though, or am I off base with this one too?

Engineering naturally ties in with economics on many levels. You simply would have to choose to go in that direction.
